Sophie Calle (born 1953) is a French writer, photographer, installation artist, and conceptual artist. Calle followed various strangers, stalking them. Her work revealed aspects of human vulnerability and explored identity. In response, I aim to follow a friend initially, investigating their private lives. I want to explore the different environments they are in throughout a day and how easy it is to find a person's whereabouts. |
As an initial response to Calle, I photographed my friend in a lesson. I achieved this by comparing timetables with her the day before and finding her classroom while I had a free period.
I think it was successful because the classroom had a window opposite where she was sitting so I was able to photograph her in the environment without her suspecting. However, the quality could have been better and I could have stayed for longer to take more pictures. Because of this, in my next set of observations I aim to find a better location from which she can't see me when I photograph her. I intend to continue 'stalking' her and intrude in on her personal life and different environments without letting her know about my project. |
Process: (editing in photoshop) 1. Cut out all the individual graffiti tags from each image using the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) 2. I then pasted them on to the edited photograph of the estates (which had been scratched with wire wool) 3. I changed the contrast of the graffiti layer, using the Brightness/Contrast tool, to match the estate because most of it was too bold to fit in with the rest of the image 4. I re-sized them all and arranged them in different places to finalise my image |
